Of the 3 paths taken to move up to the next class, this is the most guided. We expect our students who take this route to need a little extra motivation and help creatively which we intend to help them grow as they get into upper level classes. Not everyone is looking to be as well-rounded and disciplined so we also offer the other paths: Trials and Know Yourself.
CLASS PASSPORT DESCRIPTION
The Revolution Parkour Class Passport (Passport) is a tool for students who want a way to get to the next class level in an efficient manner and would like to keep track of their progress. The Passports have a section with lists of techniques that we want our students to know before moving on to the next class level. This will help us all by making sure students are in the right class for their current skill level. We don’t want students to move up before they are ready or be held back because they haven’t spoken to their instructor about their desire to move up. For students who are self-motivated it will provide them with a list of skills that they can learn during Open Gym. Our instructors will be able to plan classes that are more appropriate for the students who attend by getting a quick read on the wristbands worn by our students who complete the Passports or Trials.
In each Passport there are a list of techniques. We don’t expect all of our students to know what the techniques are until they get to them in class. For our students who want to move up and only have a few things to learn they now have the vocabulary they need to ask their instructor, “What is this technique? It’s the only one I have left before I can move to the next class.”
Next to each technique there are boxes under the words “Do”, “Do Well”, and “No Mind.” There’s no right way to use these boxes. Some students will simply make a check mark when they’ve learned to “Do” a technique while others will want to keep a record of their progress by writing the date they learned to “Do” a technique. New students who started their parkour journey elsewhere might pick up a Passport and say, “I can do everything but these two” and they might not even bother writing in the Passport. If that is the case then the Know Yourself path may be right for you for this class level. Students may start the Passports at whatever class they are currently at and may switch between paths. For instance, a student may take the Passport route to pass Beginner Parkour I and then the Trials Route to enter the Intermediate Parkour I class. Then they may use both the Passport and Trials route to enter the Intermediate Parkour II classes.
WHEN YOU'RE DONE
When a student has recorded every technique in their Passport they take it to their instructor (or any instructor) and ask, “Do you have time to pass me?” The instructor will then ask them to do a few, or up to all of the techniques in the Passport. When the instructor is satisfied that the student is proficient in the techniques they may also ask about some of the ideas presented in the Passport as a way to make sure the student understands the difference between “Do” and “Do Well” for instance. This way if they don’t know it leaves room for a conversation about it so that all of our students know what we expect of them in the next class. Please understand that the instructors are not judging you. They are more like witnesses. They see you do the technique or not do the technique. We’ve done our best to remove subjectiveness from our discipline.
We do NOT charge for our students to pass as in a martial arts belt test. We ensure that are students are not paying a dime to move up to the next class. There are additional costs for starting a new class that are 100% optional: Passports, Wristbands, etc.
Note to Parents: For those of you with younger students we encourage you to use the Passports as a way to discuss what your child is learning in class and to help you form better discussions with them. For instance, how learning parkour can help them with their studies, work and life by learning to make progressions to solve problems.
HOW TO GET A PASSPORT
You can start using your Passport by going to the front desk and requesting one. We’ve done our best to keep the cost of the Passports as low as we can. Members will of course receive a discount on their passports.
The Class Passports are completely optional. You don’t have to use them at all. We recognize that many students may benefit from not using them. If that is you then don’t worry about it. When you think you’re ready to move to the next class level then talk to your instructor and they’ll pass you to the next level in the same manner but without having used the resource. Once you’re in Beginner Parkour II classes the 2nd option for moving on to the next class is by passing the Revolution Parkour Trials.
At the beginning when a student starts class they begin with a white wristband. They are completely optional to wear but not wearing a wristband communicates to instructors when there are new students in the class. Upon completion of a level members are awarded with a new wristband for that class level. There are additional costs for students who are not members.
The wristbands serve not only as a marker of your achievement but also as a tool for Instructors to use during regular classes. The wristband gives them a heads up to the physical capabilities of the students in their classes, so that they can better tailor their instruction to each student and set up courses that are appropriate to students’ skill level. Wristbands can also help a student identify which other students might be able to help them if they have a question or need clarification on a technique.
